UNITED STATES-MIGRATION-
MIAMI, Oct 29, CMC – The United States Coast Guard says the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Raymond Evans has repatriated 70 Cuban migrants to Bahia de Cabañas, Cuba.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Coast Guard said the repatriations are a result of five separate interdiction at sea in the south Florida Straits.
“These events consisted of Cubans attempting to illegally enter the United States on un-seaworthy vessels commonly referred to as ‘rustics’ or ‘chugs’”, the Coast Guard said.
“In these instances, the Coast Guard not only helped secure the US border, but they also prevented these perilous sea voyages from ending in tragedy,” it added.
The Coast Guard says in fiscal year 2015, over 4,000 Cuban migrants attempted to illegally migrate to the US via sea.
These numbers represent the total amount of at-sea interdiction, landings and disruptions in the Florida Straits, the Caribbean and Atlantic.
