JOHN, Antigua, Aug 3, CMC – Two people, including a former government minister, were killed on Tuesday night as Antigua and Barbuda ended its annual Carnival celebrations with the traditional street jump up.
In the first incident, Police Commissioner Wendell Robinson confirmed to the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) that he had given instruction to shut down the celebrations after one unidentified woman reveller had been killed after falling under a music truck.
“Having regards for public safety and given the circumstances I think it was best (to shut down the celebrations,) Robinson said.
The incident occurred just on the outskirts of the capital and a wrecker had to be used to raise the truck in order to remove the body.
In the other incident, former government minister Eustace Cochrane died following a two car smash up on the Queen Elizabeth Highway.
Police have not yet released the details involving the car accident that claimed the life of Cochrane, who served in the Vere Bird Senior administration between 1981-1994.
