The Special Olympians team returned to Montserrat on Tuesday, July 5 to a cheering appreciable crowd who turned out to welcome the special people, winners home.
Minister of Sports Colin Riley was among those on hand with the media to welcome the team. “These young people have done an excellent job representing our country abroad,” he said, adding the sentiments of everyone else. “…they have come back with three medals now ; it’s good to see that all the ingredients of an essential program came togethe … we have the leader ship of Miss Merle Galloway and Dr. Corretta Fergus and some others who admire special Olympics…,” expressing also his joy, “for the parents, “so much love up here this afternoon to see them really come out to celebrate the return of our successful Olympic team.”

In a brief interview Merle described how, “we got immersed a little bit of the Greek culture… everybody was fully impressed with Montserrat’s national dress,” she said.

She outlined their winnings: “we placed 4th in botchy, Joan placed 4th in the singles as well as the doubles. Dillon also placed 4th in his event and Akeem won a bronze medal in the 25meter run. Javel got the silver in the long jump a gold medal in the soft ball throw, beating his personal best record in both events. it was actually quite outstanding,” she proudly announced.
She took the opportunity and thanked the many persons and businesses that supported and sponsored the team’s outing. She ventured to name some of the businesses, said, “I definitely want to thank all the volunteers that volunteer here locally every Saturday with the team.”
She then named: “Fly Montserrat, they give us lovely discounts on the tickets; Bank of Montserrat was also a good sponso, we also have the Penny family, they give us a nice donation, we have Judith Greer and Associates , we have United Insurance, we have people come and give time for their bingo donations, the Rotary Club also give a large donation as well,” adding there are lots more, as she apologised, “if I forget someone it’s not intentional…”
