Sgt. Derona Semper of the Royal Montserrat Police (RMPF) who runs its Training Department is this week conducting a course Systematic Search Procedure. , This is just another of the courses that was previously offered overseas, but is now being conducted on sight in Montserrat.
The one week course which runs from April 16 to 22, is facilitated by PC #8 Kirk Brade, a certified Systematic Search and Narcotic Drug detector dog handler . There six persons from the different departments within the RMPF, three females and three males who are participating in the training.
They are being taught both practical and theoretical subjects which include, Human rights, Health and safety, powers of search, group dynamics, rules of evidence, search techniques and areas of concealment.
Sgt. Semper, the officer responsible for the training functions of the RMPF states that the aim of the course is to train officers to effectively plan and execute searches through the management and application of systematic procedures and the use of appropriate detection equipment to locate specified targets.
She also stated that the point of fact of systematic search procedures significantly enhances the successful location of any item in whatever place it is hidden. A further objective of the training is to improve the level of efficiency and professionalism of officers in the execution of their daily investigative duties and at the same time allows a return on investment and save on financial resources. These initiatives, lend to the achievement of the strategic plan of the organisation and by extension the overall success of the Sustainable Development plan of Montserrat.
