On Christmas eve, the Windward Islands of Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines experienced excessive rain fall causing severe flooding, and caused loss of life, described further as ‘widespread devastation’ to infrastructure and property. Reports said at least eight people died and dozens were forced out of their homes by heavy rain in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
According to the reports, landslides and flooding also reportedly killed five people in neighbouring St Lucia. Heavy rain has also caused destruction in Dominica.
At the special sitting of the Legislative Assembly on December 27, Premier Reuben Meade expressed sympathy to his sub-regional counterparts in the wake of the loss of lives and grave damage to infrastructure following the heavy rains.
The Premier called for solidarity with the people of St Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia and Dominica.
