Pre–school Students will take the spotlight when OECS Day is celebrated in Dominica on Wednesday June 18, 2014. The Treaty of Basseterre establishing the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) was signed on June 18, 1981 in Basseterre, St. Kitts.
The Dominica Association of Teachers (DAT) has been collaborating with Early Childhood Educators in celebrating OECS Day in Dominica for five (5) years now, and the celebration has grown over the years.
This year, the celebration will take the form of a Street Parade from the DEXIA Compound to the Government Headquarters and an Exhibition on the Ground Floor of the Government Headquarters. A total of fifteen (15) pre-schools will participate in the Street Parade as well as the exhibition, which will highlight crops/foods from the OECS islands.
President of the Commonwealth of Dominica His Excellency Charles Savarin (DAH) and Mrs. Savarin; Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and Mrs. Skerrit, Ambassador Felix Gregoire and his Staff as well as other dignitaries and officials have been invited to the Exhibition.
The core organizers are Ms. Constance A. Norris, Proprietor of the S.P.I.C.E.S Centre; Mrs. Linda Visilante-Joseph; Proprietor of the Sacred Heart Pre-school; and Ms. Cyrilla Xavier, Proprietor of the Blossom Pre-school of Eggleston.
This year funding for the project was obtained from the OECS Commission under an EDF Project, which includes public awareness on regional integration as a component.
