ARAMARIBO, Suriname, Apr 24, CMC – Police say they are “pretty sure” that the bodies of two men found floating in the Saramacca canal last week, are those of two men who were part of a gang that earlier ran away from law enforcement authorities after they were caught red handed committing an armed robbery.

Angelico Y, 26, was arrested shortly after he and a group of men tried to rob a supermarket near the canal in southern Paramaribo.

The men had already overpowered the security guard and were tying him up when police arrived on the scene. They all ran away.

Angelico was caught, while his accomplices were able to get away in the direction of the canal.

On Wednesday, a passerby found the body of 39-year-old Jicky L. floating in the water. The body was already in advanced stage of decomposition. Police found a handgun in his pants pockets.

Police said they had also received reports of another decomposing human body in the canal, who was later identified as 34-year-old Lucien A.

Police said both men were known to them it is more than likely that they had been involved in the assault of the supermarket security guard.

Police said they are looking for two remaining suspects.
