Officials seize marijuana in container from Jamaica

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Jun 15, CMC – Guyana law enforcement authorities say they have seized more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana in a shipping container that arrived here from Jamaica.

Head of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit, James Singh, said that the container was profiled for inspection by members of the Container Control Programme (CCP) and the Drug Enforcement Unit of the Guyana Revenue Authority.

marijuana-GuyHe said the law enforcement agencies had seized 1,276 pounds of the illegal drug during the operation. It has a street value of US$765,600.

Three people, including the owner of a sawmill company are assisting the authorities with their investigations.

Singh also said that inside of the container was 21 duffer bags containing 260 packets of marijuana.
