The Ministry of Health and Social Services Department is reportedly behind the plans for the local observance of International Women’s Day 2014, which will be observed tomorrow, Saturday, March 08, 2014.
The Ministry which also deals with matters related to gender affairs, will facilitate a Women’s Retreat as the main local activity on Saturday March 8, International Women’s Day.
This year the Ministry, when asked last year, did not have any plans, but this year is partnering with the local professional group of Women WSG 10 in organizing the activity, which is aimed at bringing together women from across the island. The retreat will focus on several areas of interaction including, the spiritual self, healthy lifestyles, and the main theme – inspiring change. Special emphasis will be placed on areas such as: celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women, as well as a celebration for women’s economic, political and social achievements.
From 2000 and beyond the international arena observes, with particular reference to Africa, the Eastern world and even Cuba in the Caribbean, that the International Women’s Day tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc. with flowers and small gifts. In some countries IWD has the equivalent status of Mother’s Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers.
The International Women’s Day website notes: “However, great improvements have been made. We do have female astronauts and prime ministers, school girls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family, women have real choices. And so the tone and nature of IWD has, for the past few years, moved from being a reminder about the negatives to a celebration of the positives.
So the advice for this year, “… make a difference, think globally and act locally!! Make everyday International Women’s Day. Do your bit to ensure that the future for girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding.
While observing and sharing on the theme, “Inspiring Change, local presenters and a regional speaker will reportedly lead the discussions and social interaction. Persons who will lead the discussion and social interaction include: Dr. Shirley Kelly, Mrs. Hazel Riley, Ms Merle Galloway and Dr. Valda Henry from Dominica.
Discussions will include topics such as: Becoming a woman after God’s own heart; Woman – living out God’s Plan with passion and purpose; How to maintain a healthy body and mind; Inspiring Change, which is the theme for International Women’s Day 2014, and the role of women in helping children develop a thirst for knowledge.
According to a ZJB report, the Ministry of Social Services is also expected to make a presentation to a woman who is considered to have made invaluable contributions to health on Montserrat over the years.
From its inception in 1911, International Women’s Day has been observed on March 8 every year.
From the report all women are invited to attend, and who may need transportation are encouraged to call the Department of Social Services at (664) 491-3895 by today.
