On November 23, 2016, The Montserrat Secondary School made a donation to Haiti, who suffered severe damage and injuries in early October this year from hurricane Mathew.
Vice President from the Student Council Body Stevikha Foster, presented a cheque of the funds raised by the students from the school to Miss Milykiah Mc Kenzie, treasurer of the Montserrat Red Cross Society.
Handing over a cheque Miss Foster said they raised the funds at the school, and “We the students could not rest without donating something to Haiti, so we got EC$1122.00.”
New director Richard Aspin was on hand to witness the handover of the donation. He explained that all the funds received in Montserrat would be added to a pool from all the Overseas Territories, and forwarded to headquarters in London for disbursement to Haiti.
Aspin then pointed out the presence of the head of the Overseas branches at the British Red Cross in London Mr. Kevin Studds; “who we are lucky to have with us,” who would tell a little bit about how the money would be spent.
Mr. Studds said it was a great effort the students made and that it would be greatly appreciated by the people of Haiti. “…Thanks for the effort you’ve made. It will be greatly appreciated and will make a big difference to the people in Haiti,” noting that the funds will be used to accommodate “medical treatment for 60,000 individuals and for the 140,000 Haitians in temporary shelter.”
Over 200,000 Haitian homes were severely damaged, the presentation took place at the Montserrat Red Cross on November 23rd 2016.
