GIU – More than $12,000 in school supplies were handed over to the Montserrat Secondary School on Tuesday by members of the alumni organization, Association of MSS Graduates Inc., which is a registered non-profit group on Montserrat.
The supplies which originated in the United Kingdom include microscopes, aprons, sewing materials, dictionaries, paints and other art materials.
In addition the group donated 15 computers which were contributed by Philips Geraghty of Denovo Legal in New York. Sandrene Ryan, a MSS alum, said she was able to encourage her boss to contribute the computers and has been working to obtain even more for the school.
Receiving on behalf of the school was Principal Mrs. Cherlyn Hogan who said the donation was quite timely. “We are pleased that former students see the need to support the school now that they are gone.”
The principal thanked the group adding that the supplies would add practical experience to the theories in the classroom and help to reinforce the learning of students.”This is of tremendous benefit to our students all of who learn in different ways.
During ArrowFest 2010, the association organized one week of activities to encourage past students living abroad and locally to raise funds for the school. Events included a Meet N Greet, a hike to Rendezvous Beach, Career Day, a Family Fun Day, and a Black Tie Dinner. The group plans to host a reunion on Montserrat every two years.
All proceeds raised go towards supporting the sole secondary school on Montserrat.
