Montserrat’s reigning calypso monarch and Keithroy ‘deBear’ Morson, former reigning calypso monarch of Leeward Islands, also former of Montserrat and Antigua will travel to compete in the Leeward Islands Calypso competition to be held this weekend, slated for Saturday night starting at 8:30.
The Montserrat monarch has received overwhelming encouraging support from the local community heading into the Calypso competition this weekend.
ZJB reported that Jester “Iceman” Weekes made an appearance on the Breakfast Show Tuesday morning to update about his preparations for the regional competition.
Several persons called into the show to offer their encouragement and support to the calypsonian.
“I really want to see him win,” one caller said, commenting that deBear is also and infact defending his Leeward Islands crown is in the competition as another Montserratian. “Bear has done it already so now I think it’s the time for Iceman,” he said promising Iceman, “we will be praying for you I just want to wish you all the best”
Another caller. “I’m calling to wish Iceman all the best on his trip to Anguilla and I pray that he will really bring back the crown because I know he has it in him. May God take you safely, help you in your performance and bring you back safely. We know you can do it, we have the confidence in you so just go forth and put forth your best and make yourself, your family and Montserrat proud,” that caller said.
“You know you have to stay focused and you know you have to do what you have to do and i know you can, you’re a proud young man, you still young so do your thing – He’s going there to do it for his son and make his son and his family proud,” a third caller said.
Iceman (Steve Weekes), the reigning Montserrat monarch responded that he intends to put on a performance like never before as he paid tribute to those who he said have gone before him:
“…over the years I’ve studied my fellow calypsonians, the people who’ve gone before me – and done well. I’ve followed from the likes of Justin “Hero” Cassell to Reality to Cepeke to Hustler to Khandi to deBear to Sylk and to Cupid, one of my mentors really. …I’d like to grab the energy and what it’s like from these people and I think I’m really prepared for this show… I’m going to go to Anguilla and put down a performance there to leave Anguilla wondering…” he said.
Meanwhile the Montserrat-born Keithroy “deBear” Morson the reigning Leeward Islands Calypso Monarch had some advice for Iceman. “ Iceman is to come there make his name, make his mark, do his best and have fun at the same time and just know that, yes we’re Montserratians but he’s a competitor so I have to treat him as a competitor because if I don’t, and we both end up in the back, then it doesn’t do Montserrat any good. …you know we have to fight as hard as we can to make sure that each one of us are up there for the sake of our countries name,” he said concluding, “I just want encourage him to come there and fight, you know do his best and whatever it is, it is.”
