Junior calypso monarch competition

Tomorrow, Saturday night 15 youngsters will vie for the title of junior calypso monarch in the annual competition, organized by the teachers Union.

Union president, Hyacinth Bramble-Brown explains that the competition began with 31 registrations and two guest artists all ranging “from age 9 to about age 17”, all of whom must be attending school on the island. The completion is produced under the theme “Youth Issues”  and the number of registrants have been slowly reduced to 15 following elimination processes.

Mrs. Hyacinth Bramble-Brown explained that they settled with the theme because, “quite a number of the kids were able to put their teeth into content area; and you have strange and interesting topics like The mango not ripe, Tell them no, Talk to me…”

Each calypsonian is expected to sing two songs. In the first round the song will be on the theme ‘youth issues’ and the second song is ‘open’. The youngsters will be judged for diction, lyrics, stage performance, and a small allowance for crowd appreciation .

The reigning junior monarch Mighty Oloes, Jamal Fergus with a song that was written by the reigning 2010-11 monarch Herman ‘Cupid’ Francis.
