July Assizes closes with another sex offender imprisoned

 By Staff Reporter

The July Criminal Assizes of the High Court closed on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 after his Lordship Justice Albert Redhead handed down two sentences.

Jemel Fenton who was found guilty last Friday of “Going Equipped to Steal” received a 3 year sentence, suspended for 3 years after being found guilty of going equipped to steal. Fenton was convicted by a majority jury 7-2 while his co-accused Jerrio Meade was found not guilty of the same offence.

If he is convicted of a further offence within the three years of his suspended sentence then Fenton will be brought back to court for sentencing.

As part of his sentence Justice Redhead also ordered that Fenton is to attend psychological evaluation and counseling for one year with Clinical Psychologist Dr. Nicole Edgecombe.

Damani Victorine who was found guilty last week of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 16, was sentenced to 18 months at Her Majesty’s Prison in Brades. Victorine was found guilty of the offence by a unanimous jury on Monday July 7.

In passing sentence the learned Judge commented that the maximum sentence of 2 years was inadequate punishment and that given the recent increase to a ten-year maximum, anyone coming before him for sentencing for that offence can expect to be dealt with severely. “Big men must keep from Children” he said. The Penal Code was recently amended to increase the maximum sentence from 2 years to 10 years.
