The Davy Hill Community is seeing the long sought after construction of a Community Resource Center, which commenced last week immediately following a ground breaking ceremony.
The ceremony was marked with the usual groundbreaking ceremonies of prayers and brief remarks, beginning with an outline of the project which is being funded under the Basic Needs Trust Fund, (BNTF) Six project.
In her address, the new Minister of Health, Education and Social Services, the Honourable Delmaude Ryan pledged the PDM government support to provide budgetary support annually to ensure the successful operation of the Davy Hill Community Resource Center.
Member of Parliament, the Honourable Easton Taylor Farrell says the Davy Hill Community resource center is vital to the people of the area in Davy Hill.
Mr. Easton Taylor Farrell, recalled the project began during his tenure as former and outgoing Minister of Housing as part of the MCAP government. He like all the other speakers hoped that the center will be used as a vehicle for the social and further development of the Davy Hill Community.
Emile Duberry who ranked close to the winners of the just concluded general elections, is the Vice President of the Davy Hill Action Group. He spoke on behalf of the people and said, while thanking the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) through the BNTF for their their technical and administrative support, said “The outcome expected is that the community center is operational and people in the Community are being trained, and that there is more cohesion in the community based on the fact that people are socializing more…”
He said, “It will actually serve as a multi-purpose Resource Centre for the sustainable community development of Davy Hill…” that it will “Remove any stigma that is labelled on the Davy Hill community.”
Mr. Mervyn Browne, project manager for Montserrat, performed as chairman for the groundbreaking event. Representing the BNTF he gave an outline of the building and its design, BNTF consultant, architect Ken Cassell gave details of the building design.
Other speakers included Mrs. Mary (Ann) Allen who led off with prayers. Mrs. Christiana Weekes who runs a Day Care service, also of Davy Hill, a DHAG member gave a vote of thanks at the end.
The aim of the Resource centre is to enhance the skills and learning of residents there of the Davy Hill area.
