Her Excellency Governor Elizabeth Carriere on Friday, May 27 made a small donation to officials at the local branch of the British Red Cross.

Chairman Fire Chief Andre West along with board treasurer Milykhia McKenzie accepted the cheque in the sum of $500 from the Governor to assist in branch’s ongoing fundraising drive.

Governor Carriere is the current Patron for the charity and according to Chairman West, she has been actively supporting the organisation since she arrived on island. Handing over the cheque, appreciated the work of Red Cross and expressed pleasure to be Patron. She said: “I’m handing over a check which is a donation to the Red Cross for the very good work that they are doing, have done and will do but also because I’m the patron of the Red Cross and I’m very proud patron.”

She added her encouragement to persons in Montserrat to become volunteers and also to support the events and efforts of the Red Cross.

Meanwhile Chairman West in thanking the Governor for the donation says the contribution will go towards supporting a more than a worthy cause. The funds raised with the Governor’s involvement the chairman said, will be used to build capacity of the branch and their continued focus on community resilience.

In January, Governor Carriere hosted a fundraiser at her home in Woodlands. This netted $4060, a portion of which Mr. West says has been spent to provide gifts to the vulnerable on Valentine’s Day. The May Outreach Week raised an additional $4820. These funds the chairman said will be used towards building capacity of the branch and their continued focus on community resilience.

On Saturday July 3 the Red Cross Branch will stage a charity cricket match. The Montserrat Fire and Police Service team will take on Basil Chamber’s team. Both teams plan to include elderly members of the community. Top Calypsonian De Bear and Hustler will provide entertainment for the occasion.
