BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC – The St. Kitts and Nevis government says it is intensifying its efforts to develop the geothermal energy sector here as it seeks to expand renewable energy alternatives.
Energy Minister Ian “Patches” Liburd said that plans have been put in place to conduct a feasibility study in St. Kitts on the potential of geothermal energy.
“Our new administration has taken a comprehensive approach to facing the many challenges as it relates to energy,” he said, while outlining the government’s approach to reducing the high cost of electricity.
In Nevis, the development of geothermal has passed the exploratory drilling stage and the new Timothy Harris government believes that it would be prudent to establish what the potential of the geothermal resource on St. Kitts is, and how best it can be developed.
“Geothermal development is a key factor, as well as moving forward to establishing such resource on St. Kitts, without retarding the progress of the geothermal development on Nevis,” he said.
Liburd said “the government is looking at the legislation and bringing it up to speed to deal with feeder tariffs, geothermal development and other renewable energy resources”.
