Government accused of breaching commitment following dismissal of DPP’s wife

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Aug. 20, CMC – Chairperson of the opposition St Kitts Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP), Marcella Liburd, has accused the government of breaching its commitment to democracy, rule of law, transparency and good governance following the dismissal of Greta Sinanan, the wife of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

On Tuesday, Sinanan, who worked in the Law Commission Office in the Ministry of Legal Affairs was dismissed with immediate effect by Attorney General Vincent “Juicy” Byron Jr.

Sinanan, a Trinidadian, recently filed a claim in the St. Kitts High Court against Byron stating that he breached the Constitution by unlawfully attempting to terminate the appointment of the DPP – her husband Travers Sinanan .

The High Court proceedings also stated that the Attorney General made unlawful attempts to dictate, control and/or usurp the work of the DPP.

“The DPP brings a matter against the Attorney General and the Government and a few weeks after his wife is fired as a result of this. That is the level to which where we have reached,” said Liburd, who is also the Member of Parliament for Central Basseterre.

“How are you going to run a country when these positions are important to the government? These are not Kittitians. We say we are looking out for our brothers and sisters in the Caribbean and this is the way we are treating them? Where are they expected to go,” Liburd continued, adding that the next step by the Team Unity Government of Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris might be to lock them out of their government provided residence.

According to the opposition MP, the Sinanan’s dismissal is sending a message to the people of the twin island federation  – “Don’t mess with the government. Don’t challenge them, don’t criticize them or even appear to be criticizing them or you will lose your job and you will be frustrated in every way possible.”
