In April, 2017 the University of Sheffield Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shearer West wrote to Dr. Lewis, “It gives me great pleasure to inform you that the Honorary Degrees Committee of this University recently agreed to invite you to accept an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Medicine. In proposing this, the University wishes to recognise your highly distinguished career in the fields of Medicine and Politics.”
To the above, Dr. Lowell Lewis, since at that time, having served the Montserrat Legislature from 2001 through 2014, and more especially from 2006 to 2009 as the Chief Minister, wrote to Professor Shearer West, “Thank you very much for conveying the decision of your committee to bestow on me an Honorary Doctorate. It is with sincere humility that I accept this generous offer, which gives me the opportunity to express my gratitude to the University of Sheffield, for the extraordinary medical and surgical training program I had the good fortune to be selected for, from 1971 to 1982 at the University and Hospitals in Sheffield.”
Then recently, with a long history of achievements especially in the field of medicine and surgery, where he is expressly considered by many, ‘a gifted genius’, one who is so easily shunned, he graduated from the McGill University Montreal Canada, on May 29, 2018. His achievement is a Master of Science Degree in “Experimental Surgery and Surgical Education”. His Thesis title:- “Appropriate surgical education for countries with limited resources.”
For his thesis Dr. Lewis explained briefly, he developed a surgical curriculum knowledge and skills for countries with limited resources, while validation a number of older methods of surgical care, no longer taught or practiced because of new technologies which became standard in limited resourced countries…
Dr. Lewis is currently serving for a second time as Chief Medical Officer in Montserrat. The first time as Chief Medical Officer and Surgeon Specialist, June 1984 – September 1991 and currently on a two-year contract from October 2016.
A peek at Dr. Lewis’ shows surgical training, graduating with Bachelor degrees in Medicine and Surgery, MB ChB Sheffield University, U.K., July 1976; and from 1980 through to 2015 to present, notably in Transplant surgery. During that time, becoming a fellow in public health, management etc., on more than one occasion, he held numerous other specialist and medical appointments, always on the way, writing and showing his keenness for politics which landed him the Chief Minister full status in 2006.
Meantime, between 1984 and 2014 Dr. Lewis authored several publications in various fields.
