DFID Sand Mining Consultancy Begins

(GIU) – The Department for International Development (DFID) announced on Wednesday the start of a Sand Mining Consultancy by representatives of the Oxford Policy Management group. The study was ordered last October.

According to a statement from Dr. Kato Kimbugwe, DFID’s Private Sector Development Advisor, “The aim of the study is to provide the Government of Montserrat with a clear government policy and regulatory framework to assist the development of a vibrant, dynamic and environmentally sustainable mining and quarrying sector.”

According to the advisor, the consultancy team began meeting with stakeholders including miners, government officials, port officials, and residents on  January 10 and this is to continue until January 25, 2011. “The team is scheduled to be back in Montserrat from the March 14 to the 18, 2011 to present their recommendations to the aforementioned stakeholders for consideration before the final report is submitted to the Government of Montserrat and DFID,” Kato said.

The Consultant’s final report is expected by the end of March 2011.
