20-year-old Claris Yearwood sponsored by Cool and Smooth, Antigua, awed, the new Festival City Queen Show crowd and the judges to be crowned Miss Montserrat Festival Queen 2011-2012 on Sunday night, December 25-26, 2011.
It was their first go at the new outsourced method of the Festival Committee when Tropical Productions took on the Queen Show. There was no attempt to be spectacular, but the show was smooth with few noticeable hickups.
The girls operated on the back drop of a theme “Uniquely Montserratian”. The competition was divided into two parts, part one which showcase the swimwear and cultural segment which took place on Saturday, December 10, 2011. Lorraine Lewis and Basil “Ching Wang Yaaaah” Chambers were the MCs and were commendable. Lorraine’s voice was soft at the beginning but switched sides with Basil and as she warmed got into the show.
Yearwood copped the crown ahead of four other contenders: Maggie Detouche sponsored by Montserrat Utilities and Monfest (Montserrat Festival Committee), was easily the first runner up with Tiffiany Ryan, sponsored by Bruce Farara taking the next big spot. Nathalia Durand, sponsored by Fly Montserrat and Monfest, and Joslyne Fenton sponsored by Monfest made up the five contextants
The young Davy Hill girl, who one day hopes to become a criminal profiler, was judged Miss photogenic emerging the winner of best talent, best cultural presentation, best evening wear and best introductory and promotional speech, which she shared with the first runner-up Maggie Detouche.
18-year-old Maggie Detouche was the first runner-up. She is a teacher in training, a young songwriter and performer. She was the winner of the swimwear along with her tie in the introductory and promotional speech segments. 23-year-old Nathalia Durand won the question and answer segment and voted Miss Congeniality by the other delegates. Each segment carried a total of 50 points.
The contestants were serenaded by Montserrat’s first song Idol, Miss Tomeika Jeffrey and they each were presented with a rose by Kareen Thomas the recently crowned Mr. Montserrat.
There were several guest performances to entertain the audience. They included the popular Ben Durand and one the semi-finalists in the Montserrat Idol competition in Racquel Smith.
