Catherine Stevens formerly resided and taught at Foxes Bay dies at 98.
This information has been passed on to The Montserrat Reporter. It announces that Miss Catherine Stevens formerly of St Christopher’s school in Montserrat, has died at the age of 98.

She celebrated that birthday on March 27th and died on June 1, 2011.

The message came in from Carole Paterson carole@paterson1024.fsnet.co.uk who said: “It is my sad duty to inform you of the death of Miss Catherine Stevens, formerly of St Christopher’s school, Foxes Bay, in Montserrat. She was 98 years old on March 27th, and passed away yesterday.”

Reaction from several on island who remember Miss Stevens was quick.

Jacquie Ryan (parent of former pupils)
“Truly, truly Sorry to learn of Miss Stevens passing.  Such a gracious woman an a brilliant educator.  She had a major hand in molding my children’s youth and setting a great standard in the early years of their education.  Judy and Nicole will be truly saddened by her passing.  She lived in their memory all these years and I know they will not ever forget her.”

Another wrote: “I am very sad over this news. Miss Catherine Stevens was a gracious lady who gave of her all to the island of Montserrat and who was a valuable asset to the island’s education system. (She ran what was called at the time a pre-school).

Toni Frederick (a former pupil): “She was quite a lady, our Miss Stevens.  I’ll remember her fondly.  I mean, she introduced us to Shakespeare at five years old!  How cool is that?!  We used to have to greet her and say goodbye in French. Au revoir, Miss Stevens…”

She will be missed by many of the current adults of Montserrat who were her pupils at St Christopher’s in Foxes Bay.”

The information said, “She was looking forward to receiving her telegram from HM the Queen when she reached her 100th birthday, but it was not to be.”

Camille Frith Roach remembers her from 26 years ago and says, “she was a good teacher too. I remember she had two lovely German shepherd dogs. Please convey my condolences.”

Shirley Spycalla (parent of former pupil): “Miss Catherine Stevens was a gracious lady who gave of her all to the island of Montserrat and who was a valuable asset to the island’s education system.  Stevie, as we all knew her, will be missed by many of the adults of Montserrat who were her pupils at St Christopher’s Primary School in Foxes Bay. May she rest in peace.”

Other pupils of Miss Steven’s school included Stoddard Jeffers, Sharon Wooding, Beverly Edwards and her sister Sharon, Nicole Arthurton, Jane Sturge, Michelle Graham, Heidi Shea, Jill and her sister Chrissie Butterworth, etc.

There will be a funeral service at 12.30pm on Tuesday at West Lothian Crematorium (Scotland).

May she rest in peace.

There will be a funeral service at 12.30pm on Tuesday at West Lothian Crematorium (Scotland).  She will be missed!
