Budding designer moving to the forefront

The COMYA Sunset Fete Fair held at the Woodlands Beach on February 12th, organized by Janelle Brandt-Requa of Jaja Designs, received raved reviews. This budding designer is bent on making her mark in history of the island of Montserrat.

During the main show local designers, those involved in steel pan and string band music showcased their handiwork and skills.

Among culinary delights were the sweet and savoury dishes, including Ms. Tina’s mouth water cakes, John from Johns Place and his famous goat water, CathRon a local liqueur made by Ron the Don and his wife Catherine, Mr Warren Cassel Jr. the youngest patron with his greeting and business cards. There was also Jamaica jerk pork and curry and roti from Guyana.

The Models

During the show the participants were entertained with music form the string band, the Masquerades jam band and the Volpanics Steel Orchestra.

COMYA is an acronym suggested by Mr David Lake and a group Formed by Mrs Janelle Brandt Requa of Jaja Designs. It means Cultural of Montserrat Yard Association (or Activities), and when use in the context of Montserratian dialect it means ‘come here’.

The main objective of the organization is mainly to encourage the residents of Montserrat to develop indigenous industries using locally grown and produced items. Local artistes and band were also on show.
