Body of woman who committed suicide at Kaieteur Falls recovered

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Dec. 2, CMC – The remains of a 21 year old woman who committed suicide by jumping over the Kaieteur Falls, last month, were recovered late Tuesday by security officials.

The police report that on November 21, Roshinne Pagwah was returning to an aircraft with a group of nine and two guides, when she turned, ran towards the Falls and jumped into the gorge.

Although her body was spotted several days ago, the police and soldiers were unable to retrieve her body, due to the lack of resources.

Late Tuesday her body was scheduled to be released to relatives.

Phagwah was the second person in recent months to have committed suicide by plunging into the gorge.

In September another woman, Gyaneshwarie “Lalita” Sivanand jumped to her death.

In both cases, the women reportedly had domestic problems.

Domestic aviators, tourism officials and other persons have expressed grave concern about the incidence of suicide in the vicinity of the Falls.

Guyana has been ranked by the World Health Organisation as the country with the highest incidence of suicides.
