Sharline Gibbons is the 2014 Montserrat Idol out shining her competition on Saturday April 6, 2014 before a surprising tightly packed Cultural Centre.
The 16 year old triumphed over 2 other contestants – her sister Alicia Ross and Cassandra Weekes. The annual event that just completed its fourth season, was staged over 10 weeks, featured more than 11 contestants and was produced by Tom Walker. The first 9 weeks of the show was staged at Soca Cabana Bar & Restaurant, in Little Bay.
It was the first time that two siblings were competing against each other in the finals. The contestants performed in three categories: one of the favorite songs from amongst the numerous songs they performed over past nine weeks; a Gospel song acappella, and any other song of their choice.
Producer Tom Walker told TMR that the purpose of the show “was to give people a chance to see developing young talent and to give young and talented people on Montserrat an opportunity to seen and to extend that talent beyond this island shore.”
During the first nine weeks of the competition, judges, Michelle Graham, Basil Chambers, Lorraine Lewis, Herman ‘Cupid’ Francis, Kandie Malone, and Rebecca Chalmers critiqued the contestants. However, the final competition featured Michelle, Basil, Lorraine and Rebecca.
On Saturday night Basil recognized and singled out Tomeira Playter (who was in the audience) as an outstanding contestant who did not make it to the finals.
Previous winners were Tomeika Fenton, Dunaviere Piper aka “DNicess”, and Annakay Duggan.
Tom Walker expressed gratitude to the judges, contestants, their supporters and the audience that supported them over the past several weeks. Special mention was also made of the sponsors Ashoks, SVG Air, Catamaran Hotel (Antigua), LIME, Bruce Farara, Island Music and Media.
