12-year non-national residents can apply free of specific requirements for citizenship

As the rumour and speculation hit the ‘news’ lines that it is an ‘elections’ gimmick, one news outlet reports as follows:

“Ahead of upcoming general elections, Premier Donaldson Romeo has announced that his government has put a moratorium until June 1, 2020 for non-nationals residing in the country for 12 years or more…”

The offer is for those wishing to apply for their Montserrat nationality, and is available with the government removing the savings requirements of $5,000 or more. However, all other requirements remain.

In making the decision Romeo said it was taken for residents living here more than 12 years, between now and June 1, 2020, they have removed the savings requirements of the conditions. According to the Act, the applicant must show “proof that he has maintained a savings account with an average monthly balance of at least $5,000 during the 6 months immediately preceding his application.”

He noted that that all other requirements remain. and that the Cabinet decision was based on economic and humanitarian grounds, acknowledging that many non-nationals have invested in homes, are paying rent, and setting up businesses.

The date for General Elections must be announced to be held no later than January 8, 2019.
